Earlier this week, things got a bit rowdy at joint practices between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans. And while it might get chippy for their preseason matchup tonight, hopefully, they got the punch-throwing out of their systems.
In a press conference on Thursday, Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians said that, while most starters will not play versus the Titans, some fighting for jobs will have to. “We’ll have a very condensed package, and hopefully, we get through the game healthy,” said Arians.
Tom Brady, who took a third-down sack in the one series he played in the preseason Week 1 outing versus the Cincinnati Bengals, will not suit up. So, look for Blaine Gabbert to start the game with rookie Kyle Trask on deck second. Trask’s challenge will be to show he’s worthy of the No. 2 job behind Brady. With Tom Brady on the sideline, third-string quarterback Ryan Griffin should also see some action. Pressure will be on Griffin to redeem himself for the two-interception performance against the Bengals last week.
What should really be an interesting watch are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ reserve cornerbacks and defensive linemen. The two units are stacked with depth, and players are battling for a coveted spot on the 53-man roster. Cutdowns from 80 players to 53 are Tuesday, Aug. 31.
With the Bucs sitting many starters, expect the Titans to do the same. Don’t anticipate quarterback Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry, or new addition Julio Jones seeing the field tonight.
