Demaryius Thomas: Gone Too Soon

You didn’t have to be a Denver Broncos fan to love Demaryius Thomas. He wasn’t just a professional on and off the field; he was a shining example to all of us, proving no matter where you come from or what cards you’re dealt, ANYONE can overcome ANY obstacle through hard work and dedication.

He was born in Montrose, Georgia, in 1987 to a family in poverty. Thomas’s work ethic began as a child, where he began picking peas at the age of 5 to help support his family. In 1999 at the age of 11, his mother, Katina Smith, and grandmother, Minnie Pearl Thomas, were arrested for running a cocaine ring, forcing Thomas to live with his aunt and uncle (his father is in the military). In 2000 Thomas’s mother Katrina Smith was given a prison sentence of over 20 years — one that might have been shorter except that she refused to testify against her mom.

Statistics say that most children who experience this type of early trauma suffer significantly and often end up repeating their parent’s mistakes; however, Demaryius Thomas was no ordinary child.

In 2015, Thomas lead a successful petition for clemency on Change.org, effectively securing the freedom of his mother Katrina Smith by President Barack Obama (grandmother released in 2016)

Fast forward 1 year, and the mom, Thomas saw taken away in handcuffs when he was 11, was in attendance during Super Bowl 50, watching her Son defeat the Carolina Panthers 24-10.

During his 10-season career between the Broncos, Texans, Patriots, and Jets, Thomas caught 724 passes, tallying 9,763 yards and 63 touchdowns. He officially retired in June, ending his professional football career where it all began.

Tragically Demaryius Thomas, the former Pro Bowl wide receiver and Super Bowl champion with the Denver Broncos, was found dead Thursday evening at the age of 33.

Thomas was found at his Roswell home, and preliminary information pointed to a medical issue as the cause, police said. “Our investigators currently have no reason to believe otherwise.” A police spokesperson said via email.
